Idea: Repeat Dungeons
Dungeoneers

Seeking feedback …

We’re contemplating a major change to the game. Please comment in the Forum, feedback form, or by email.

Proposal: When you lose a career game and restart, you get the exact same dungeon. (Same monster layouts, loot placements, etc.). This way you can learn the dungeon with each try, so you can better optimize the next run. When you win and advance to the next dragon, the dungeon would change.

(We wouldn’t want people getting stuck on a particularly hard dungeon, so we’d do something like have the dungeon change after a day or so. Or maybe after a day of the same dungeon, you have the option to generate a new dungeon.)

Our concern about this approach is that exploring the dungeon might become a chore, where you feel like you should record where the good weapons are.

What do you think?

I think the option to retry the same dungeon would be good. But also to have the option to randomize it. Say it was overly difficult. Versus not having the option until after a full day.

At some (high) levels IMO many of the maps are pretty impossible, so (by your suggestion) those players would be effectively limited to one game attempt per day.

BTW I’m not very interested in remembering the location of the best weapons. That’s against the point of rolling dices at all.

A better option would be a totally optional dungeon retry, without more artificial restrictions. BTW, I think a better place to invest your resources would be in more monsters and zones.

Interesting, but there would be very few situations where I would want the dungeon to repeat. It would feel more like a penalty than a perk. For players who might value this feature, how about make it optional?

Don’t think the game is to “beat a certain monster layout”; randomizing a dungeon is the way to go. If you decide to keep a dungeon the same, it should re-set the next day so that you are not stuck trying to clear the same layout. Note that some “random” layouts are MUCH harder than others; if would get really boring to try over and over to try to beat a really hard layout.

On another note; the current layout of having the really large monsters on the FIRST LEVEL is not really a good idea. Starting with level 1 equipment and trying to beat monsters with level 7 weapons is not “fair”. With only 3 health, I almost lost on Level 1 of the tournament as I received 2 hits in the first lair….

After reading other comments I would also like to support the option of more dungeon rooms rather than the changing of how monsters/levels work…..kinda like the random rooms when fighting dragons.

Making this dungeon repeat feature a totally optional thing seems to be the best way to do it, in my opinion.

— Comment: Retry the same dungeon, would make me think: Should I need to face those Ghosts again if I need that gold shield? Sounds more like a penalty! Though other players may like.. so if implementing this, please make it optional. — More suggestions: I totally agree with more levels or different rooms, monsters or locations not only in career but all modes! also new characters would be awesome! what about a mage or a half-orc? New spells like Firewall or Nova (both classic!) or maybe a new weapon staff or new armor or helm! I know I know, I’m asking too many things! But please consider them in your back log :-D !!

Perhaps as an option? I rely on the RNG a lot at my low level. But awesome idea! Keep up the good work :)

Another comment: mark where good weapons are, sounds like contradictions to the rollout for weapon improvement… is it really random value or was already previously decided?

Aug 4, 2020 18:22

I like the idea of perhaps adding the repeat dungeon as an option the player can select the next time they attempt. I like the randomly generated maps, but having the option to repeat a map when I caught a bad roll could be useful.

Aug 4, 2020 18:58

I dunno, my instinct is to say I prefer it being randomized every time, but then again I’ve been playing a few days only, so maybe the veterans have a better idea.

Aug 4, 2020 22:36

As an option yes but otherwise you would not do us any favour cause sometimes the mix of the dungeons are very much impossible and I have no fun to try again and again the same dungeon where an rng has mixed impossibility.

I´m also not interested in learning every single step you have to do at what point in the game to come closer to victory, what is even not possible in a steady way cause of the dice rngs.

So just NO I would quit this game immediately, actually I´m wondering a little bit that you really consider this change….

It is not a good idea. I’m not convinced that the dungeon cells are even random any more, but even if they are I would not wish to repeat them “over and over”. It would make play even more “grind-y”. The game already has more than enough grind.

Aug 5, 2020 10:04

To be honest the game does get repetitive even in it’s randomness :) However I think it a better idea to randomize the map after a death, that way it will feel fresh and give the fog of war a chance to work it’s magic. It also eliminates those “impossible’ line ups that can destroy a player who has gotten crappy chest/loot rolls.

Aug 5, 2020 10:55

I think repeating a dungeon could be fine as an option, but not the default.

Aug 5, 2020 12:16

The randomness seems to really change the treasures and weapons you get. If you get a bad draw, you are stuck with it. If the dungeon is randomized, you can expect a better set of circumstances if you get bad luck. Maybe have a choice of doing the same dungeon or not.

Aug 5, 2020 12:43

I agree with a few of the other players, making repeating dungeons a choice rather than a mandatory setting for a day.

Aug 5, 2020 16:08

Sounds like most people wouldn’t like repeat dungeons except as an option. It’s probably not worth creating an option that people are indifferent to, so this idea has been sent to the back of the line.

Thanks, everyone, for the thoughtful feedback. It was helpful.

Agree with keeping it random (or an option) like most of the others above. Also with algren001 that having big monsters on the first level is not “fair”. I’ve been knocked out of the tournament twice on level 1, just like that.

My idea on this is to use this feature with some extra combinations: You have the option, but you loose a fame if you reset the dungeon to random. If you win it on retry, you don’t loose (but gain) the fame. But it should nevertheless reset the next day without loosing fame. However, on the high levels it is purely a matter of drop. You cannot defeat 40 dragons in a bad layout with a 7,7,7 drop. I would suggest to make an additional drop where the hero died (if it is in the dragon lair). It should be the best weapon of the hero that died. This way you can improve your 8-equip from the 7-drop-upgrade to a 9 in the second try. That might make the try worth.

Repeating dungeons doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. If you had a great layout and found very good equipment, how were you killed so easily? And if you instead had a terrible trip, why go through that again?

Although there would be one great advantage: It would be a lot easier to get the Game Changer achievement.
